Here's my sermon in 10 Tweets, “Why Marriage?" (Matthew 19:1-6; Genesis 2:18-25; 1:26-28), Loveology: Love, Sex and Relationships in the Story of God

Loveology - Week 2 from Five Oaks Church on Vimeo.

1/ I’ve officiated in a lot of weddings, but only once did I threaten to pull out days before wedding...

2/ What I wanted to say: "I have no idea what to tell you, but please ask your parents to stop calling me."

3/ What do you do when locked in a conflict? There is rarely only one way to resolve the issues we fight about.

4/ What would Jesus say if they were sitting in his office. Mat. 19:1-6 suggests he'd take them back to God's purposes for marriage.

5/ "You’re asking me tell you who is right or to miraculously come up with a compromise. But you’re asking the wrong question."

6/You should be asking, "What does God want for my marriage?"

7/ Marriage is for friendship, companionship, fellowship. How is this being served by your conflict & what you want out of it?

8/ “So, you’re arguing about how often to clean the bathroom. How well is this serving your together-mission?

9/ If you believe this, how does it change the nature of your conversation?

10/ How will your solution reflect  the self-giving, mutual service you see in the Bible between Father, Son and Holy Spirit?”

Here's last weekend's sermon in 10 Tweets, "What is Love? (1 John 4:8)," Loveology: Love, Marriage and Relationships in the Story of God: 15566982299_7d3ba51244_o

1/ What is love? Henry: "Lois, Nala has stinky feet!" Lois: "Yeah, I know, but I don't mind it."

2/ The Bible's definition of love: God is love. You have no idea the depths of that statement unless you have the backstory.

3/ The depths of God's love early in the story (Creation) doesn't become evident until much later in the story.

4/ At Separation (Gen 3) there is a rending of all relationships. God sees the consequences of sin yet loves so much he launches a rescue plan.

5/ God's Promise to pay the price of Abraham's (and our) sins with his life is incomprehensible & ludicrous for the next 2000 years.

6/ By Salvation (the gospels) God's love in creation becomes evident. He had all the love & fellowship he needed in himself (Jn 1 & 17:5)

7/ He creates us to share in his love. To join the dance.

8/ When Jesus goes to the cross, we see the fulfillment of his promise. God pays the price. God dies. Rom 5:6-8, while we were still sinners

9/ That is the backstory to the song called "God is love"

10/ God's story--which is the gospel--gives you the pattern and power for love in your life.
